Scope of practice for LPNs may include aesthetic healthcare procedures with the appropriate education and training, only if delegated by, and under the direct supervision of an APRN or other clinical supervisor. However, LPNs may not perform aesthetic injections.

“Direct supervision” means supervision by a licensed independent practitioner who is physically in the aesthetic healthcare facility, and immediately available to provide in-person clinical supervision and direction during the entire time of an aesthetic healthcare procedure.

NEW MEXICO SETS THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT’S CEILING BY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, THEN LETS THE SUPERVISING PHYSICIAN NARROW IT. “Unless otherwise provided by law, physician assistants may provide medical services within the scope of the physician assistants’ education and experience.” And on limits: “Practice limitations are determined by the supervising physician’s or specialty and practice setting in addition to the physician assistant’s education and training.” The rule states no list of procedures and names no modality, so what a New Mexico physician assistant may inject is decided by those two things and not by an enumeration.

THE SUPERVISION IS A NAMED PHYSICIAN AND A REACHABLE ONE. “Supervision of a physician assistant must be rendered by a licensed supervising physician.” That physician must “Provide direction to the physician assistant to specify what medical services should be provided. This may be done through a written utilization plan or by other direct communications”, must “Provide a means for immediate communication between the physician assistant and the supervising physician”, and must keep a quality assurance program reviewing the medical services the physician assistant provides.
