What this number is not. It is not our processing time. Part of the gap belongs to the source: the FDA routinely dates an inspection citation weeks before it appears in the public database, and we cannot separate their delay from ours. We publish the whole gap rather than the flattering half of it. Sources are polled daily, and everything that can reach your inbox is human-reviewed before it appears — so this is not a live wire, and we no longer describe it as one. (Two capped Tier-C exhaust feeds publish to the record automatically and can never email you; see methodology.)
These are the same figures the API returns in every response, computed the same way from the same module — an API consumer sees no banner, so the caveat has to travel inside the payload or it does not travel at all.
How current the cited rules are
Every rule we publish carries the date we last read it against its statute, regulation or board source. We re-read on a 180-day cycle and show the oldest one here, not just the average — the oldest is the one that would embarrass us.

Nothing is overdue right now. When something is, this box will say so and name the count rather than quietly aging — a rule past its date still gets shown with its citation, because what expires is our assurance about it, not the citation itself.
What we screened, last 7 days
Scanning a source and judging what it published are different things, and for three weeks in September they came apart here without either number above changing. This is the third one: how many items each group of feeds actually evaluated. A group that evaluated nothing cannot tell you the period was quiet, and we say so rather than leaving you to infer it from a date.

What each source has produced
Counts are published items on record, all-time, with the material share in parentheses (“material” = a rule change worth a practice’s attention — see methodology). The date is the source’s own date on the most recent item, not the date we scanned. A quiet source with a current scan is regulatory silence, which is information too.

What “measuring” means. This tier does not judge a source until it has watched it long enough to know its normal rhythm — a state board that posts monthly and one that posts daily cannot share a single staleness rule. Until that window closes, the honest answer is that we are still measuring, and that is what it says. It is not a synonym for healthy, and it is not a fault.
What “behind” means — and what it doesn’t. It means ourpoll of that feed is outside its window — not that the source itself is down. A publisher can be perfectly healthy while a key of ours expires. We publish which feed rather than only a count, because whether it matters depends entirely on which one: our legislative feed going quiet affects every state claim on this site, while a border-refusal feed going quiet affects nothing you would act on. We don’t publish failure counts or error messages — those are operational noise that invites misreading and change nobody’s decision.
