Kansas gates the advanced practice registered nurse TITLE on board licensure: no professional nurse may announce or represent to the public that they are an advanced practice registered nurse unless they have complied with the requirements established by the board and hold a valid APRN license. The board establishes those standards and requirements, including standards and requirements relating to the education of advanced practice registered nurses. The healing arts act separately makes it unprofessional conduct to use any letters, words or terms as an affix, on stationery, in advertisements or otherwise indicating that a person is entitled to practice a branch of the healing arts for which that person is not licensed. Current PA law as of October 23, 2026 requires physician direction and supervision and a written prescribing agreement. Enacted HB2702 changes this on January 1, 2027: a PA attesting to at least 4,000 postgraduate clinical hours and no discipline under §65-28a05 may use physician or physician-group collaboration under a practice agreement kept on site and available to the board. Less experienced PAs remain under physician supervision and a written practice agreement. These future provisions are not yet effective.

• The board shall establish standards and requirements for any professional nurse who desires to obtain licensure as an advanced practice registered nurse. Such standards and requirements shall include, but not be limited to, standards and requirements relating to the education of advanced practice registered nurses.

• Physician assistants practice in a dependent role with a supervising physician and may perform those duties and responsibilities through delegated authority or written agreement; a person licensed as a physician assistant may perform, only under the direction and supervision of a physician, acts which constitute the practice of medicine and surgery to the extent authorized by the responsible physician and consistent with board rules; and a physician assistant may prescribe drugs pursuant to a written agreement as authorized by the supervising physician.

• Future law, effective January 1, 2027: HB2702 §10 permits a PA attesting to at least 4,000 postgraduate clinical hours, with no disciplinary action under K.S.A. 65-28a05, to practice in collaboration with a physician or physician group under a practice agreement kept at the practice site and available to the board on request. Collaboration, consultation and referral depend on the patient’s condition, PA education, experience and competencies, and standard of care. The parties determine the terms, conditions and limitations, with credentialing and privileging systems also determining them in licensed facilities. A PA with fewer than 4,000 postgraduate clinical hours must practice with physician supervision under a written practice agreement. These provisions are enacted but do not replace current supervision requirements before January 1, 2027.
